Oil and Gas - Pipe rack and Stair Tower
Henry Abram & Sons Ltd. (HASL) were contracted by ALE to oversee the transportation of pipe racks and a stair-tower from Stavanger to Kollsnes. The pipe racks ranged from 127 Te to 56 Te.
The cargo was stowed in the hold and on the deck of a general cargo vessel, the MV Paper Moon. The pipe racks presented several challenges from a support and securing point of view. The pipe racks were to be supported 4 feet which were constructed of SHS with no base plate. Therefore the loads had to be spread using dragline boards and timber. The pipe racks were secured using welded blockers and chains.
The pipe rack on the hatch covers caused some concern and HASL had to prove the strengths of the hatches using structural drawings provided. This led to a finite analysis of the hatch to back up general observations from the drawings.
With the cargo on and secured to the satisfaction of the HASL marine superintendent, warranty surveyor and client the ship and cargo safely completed the journey to Kollsnes. HASL also attended at the discharge to check that the cargo had reached its destination safely and to advise on discharge and clean up of the vessel.
